Pretty Bird Tail Woman

This is a love story from the 1840s that starts with a Hidatsa woman, Pretty Bird Tail Woman, who would accompany her sister-in-law gathering berries in the Absaroka Mountains. The sister-in-law uses these trips to meet her lover, who brings along a friend. Although she is married, Pretty Bird Tail Woman eventually falls for this young man, Buffalo Bull Who Comes Over The Ridge.

When Buffalo Bull Who Comes Over The Ridge is hurt in a battle, he is left with his younger brother near present day Billings, Montana. He is recuperating in hiding and Pretty Bird Tail Woman is determined to find him. After getting a map of his location along the Yellowstone River, she travels for a month to get to there. She finally finds him by singing their song, and then nurses him back to health.

Upon their return to the village, there is a celebration, which Pretty Bird Tail Woman’s husband attends. Upon seeing him, she falls back in love with her husband, and they are reunited.
