Arapaho LoryJay SunRhodes from Wyoming’s Wind River Reservation, dances the ‘Chicken Dance.’ The name of this dance, which has become popular in Pow Wows throughout the United States and Canada, derives from its movements which imitate those of a sage grouse – also known as the sage or prairie chicken. These birds were a significant part of the Shoshone pre-reservation diet as they were plentiful and easy prey. Dance movements are based on the bird’s posturing during mating season, when protecting its territory, and when hunting. The dancer’s regalia consists of a bustle – much smaller than that worn by traditional dancers – and a head roach made from the hair of a porcupine. A long sleeve shirt, leggings, breech cloth, arm and leg bands, as well as bells around each ankle, complete the ensemble. Each element has special meaning to the dancer. LoryJay created his regalia to honor his vow of sobriety and regaining his right to to participate in sacred prayers.
