Pilot Peak Legend

Pilot Peak in Yellowstone National Park is a prominent landmark, soaring upwards above a skyline of rugged mountains. It is here that the Sun of the Son went up into the sky to be with his father the Sun after helping other spiritual beings destroy incarnations of evil down on earth. In Yellowstone, many of the dangerous monsters the Son of the Sun defeated were turned into natural phenomena such as Bull Roaring Cave – now known to unsuspecting tourists as ‘The Dragon’s Mouth.’

According to Grant, this was the only place on earth where these kinds of transformations – from evil beings to natural features on the landscape – could have happened. They are a testimony to the extraordinary powers that dwell in the heart of a region the Crow claim as their spiritual homeland.

Another important place to the Crow people is a peak Grant referred to as Magnetic Mountain on the Pitchstone Plateau in the western part of Yellowstone National Park.  It is known for magnetic anomalies that will throw off a compass reading due to volcanic forms of iron associated with the magma flows there. This was the place “where many went to die.”
