Old Red Woman misleads the Little Boy

In this story, a young Crow woman passes through a hole in the sky to the land where the Sun and the Moon live. There she marries the Sun and gives birth to a child. Mother and child live in an idyllic world until they are tempted. Hidden under a buffalo chip a forbidden opening leads them down to Earth, back to “their people” and their “true home”.
When his mother is killed on their return journey the little boy is befriended by Old Red Woman, a powerful and evil adversary. She uses reverse psychology to lure this young Crow culture hero to his doom: “Whatever you do” she councils, “do not go there…” and “ whatever you do, make sure you do not do this…”.
Knowing full well that her young charge will pursue the forbidden place the minute her back is turned, she deliberately plots his demise under the guise of concern for his well-being. The moral of this universal story speaks for itself and serves as a warning for those listening at the feet of the storyteller.
