Bates Battle
On July 4, 1874, A Northern Arapaho encampment of 112 lodges with old men, women, and children was viciously attacked. In the early morning hours, the U.S. Calvary and 150 Shoshone scouts created what is known as The Bates Battle led by captain Bates who was killed during this fight. While the warriors were out camping, the Arapaho old men, women, and children went under attack and fought back. With some lives lost, the Northern Arapaho camp was able to defeat the U.S. Calvary and their Scouts. This battle was a great victory for the Northern Arapaho Tribe told to Northern Arapaho Tribal Member Herbert Welch by his grandmother Mary Agnes Crispin Goggles.
