A young Crow couple break with tradition by camping alone and having a permanent camp. While the husband hunts, the pregnant woman is visited by an old woman. When it comes time to give birth, the old woman betrays her and takes out a knife and cuts out her twin boys. Old Red Woman knows that they are powerful beings, so she throws one in the spring and the other behind the tipi lining.
When the husband comes back, he finds his dead wife propped up by a short tipi pole. He takes her and ties her to a tree limb.
The boys grow up fast and eventually Tipi Lining Boy reveals himself to his father in order to comfort him. Tipi Lining Boy coaxes his brother out of the spring, and they become companions, but he always disappears when the father comes home for the day. Finally, Tipi Lining Boy enlists the help of his father to pull his twin brother from the spring and the three of them begin to live together
