Battle of Rainy Buttes
The Battle of Rainy Buttes in 1858 marked a significant encounter between the Crow and their enemy the Sioux. It was a key battle in which the Crow killed the father of the famous Sioux leader, Sitting Bull.
Grant Bulltail’s version of the battle contains remarkable detail, told on site at the Rainy Buttes Ranch in North Dakota. Featuring the heroic deeds of the young Crow warrior Iron Eyes, we follow his daring exploits until he finally succumbs with so many arrows in his horse that “its body no longer touched the ground”.
Another valiant Crow who had the power of the grizzly bear also fought to his death – but not before being overtaken by his ‘medicine’ – taking on the characteristics and physicality of his spirit animal.
