Buffalo Restoration

The Buffalo Returns program on the Wind River Reservation is re-introducing bison to their traditional habitat. By conserving the historical and cultural ties of this animal to native people, this program honors the past and provides healing for the future.

The buffalo improve the wildlife diversity of the ecosystem, returning a keystone species after an absence of over 100 years. It is the hope of this program to return the bison as a wildlife species, freed from the bonds of its current livestock classification. Free to roam, hunted as game. Providing a recovery to the  ecosystem, while revitalizing a culture.
