Creating a Chokecherry bioregion

Chokecherries – Prunus virginiana – are a staple food for many plains tribes. As buffalo eradication led to the reservation life with the introduction of commodity foods imposed by the United States Government, chokecherries remained as one of the few traditional foods available to many tribes.

On the Wind River Reservation, the nonprofit Wind River Grow Our Own 307 in collaboration with both the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes are planting medicinal trees, plants and shrubs to help revitalize traditional uses. Chokecherries are a primary part of this endeavor.
