Beginning to Heal

In 2016 The Eastern Shoshone Tribe designated 300 acres of land dedicated to Buffalo, and since then have expanded several hundred more. Jason Baldes, Buffalo Restoration Manager for the Eastern Shoshone Tribe states that an increase of bison to the land will create an increase in biodiversity of the land’s plants and animals. Bringing school kids, University students, and the tribe’s elders to this land is providing healing to all. Jason Baldes says, “The buffalo will be here from now on, we do not have to go backwards.” The Eastern Shoshone Tribe plans to plant an orchard of traditional foods for community members to enjoy, further helping to heal historical trauma through the connection to their land.
