NMP mourns the passing of Jeff Meldrum
garywortman2026-04-03T17:28:23+00:00Dr. Jeffrey Meldrum passed away in September. He was a full professor of Anatomy and Anthropology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University. He was an expert on foot morphology and locomotion in primates.
Meldrum published numerous academic papers ranging from vertebrate evolutionary morphology, the emergence of bipedal locomotion in modern humans, and the plausibility behind the Sasquatch phenomena. It was in the capacity of researching Sasquatch that he met Wyoming naturalist and NMP co-founder, John Mionczynski.
For several years before NMP became a non-profit organization, Dr. Meldrum sponsored our work through his department at ISU. Our interest perfectly aligned in the mutual interest in Native stories of anomalous creatures, particularly Sasquatch. Indigenous stories of Big Foot (variously known as Sasquatch (‘wildman’); Nawasee (‘Lost Brother’); Nuwadika (‘Cannibal’); Hairy Man; and the Wailing Woman – all providing similar descriptions – abound from Maine to California.
Once NMP incorporated, Dr Meldrum served as an active member of NMP board of directors as chairman of the education committee, before taking a leave of absence in 2024. He is remembered by his colleagues as a generous and thoughtful contributor to our organization.
Dr. Meldrum died in Pocatello, Idaho, after a brief battle with brain cancer, at the age of 67, in Sept 2025. Please visit the following article for a closer look at his amazing career.
